OFFICE OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

At MSSD, student organizations cover five domains of education – social, physical, intellectual, communicative, and emotional (SPICE). Examples of past evening workshops and activities include international awareness week, pumpkin carving contest, UNO tournament, yoga, Jeopardy night and multicultural activities and much more. The following list of opportunities are currently being offered at MSSD:

Diversity Support Groups 
Diversity organization educates students of color about different cultures, backgrounds, and languages. The Diversity organization hosts monthly multicultural awareness activities and programs for the MSSD community with opportunities for leadership, recognition, and celebration.

Junior Black Deaf Advocates 

The purpose of the JR BDA, Junior Black Deaf Advocates, is to prepare the need generation of Black deaf and hard of hearing leaders to serve in a diverse community. The organization aims to increase self-esteem in cultural value and to continue to build awareness about being Black deaf or hard of hearing individuals in today’s society. Students have opportunities to lead and participate in educational activities and regular discussions of current and participate in educational activities and regular discussions of current issues surrounding the black community.

Junior National Association of the Deaf 

The youth chapter of the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) develops leadership skills, self-advocacy awareness and citizenship. Jr. NAD is responsible for Leadership seminars offered to student officers from student classes/organizations and creating volunteer community service opportunities to promote citizenship in the community.

Peer Advisors

Peer Advisors serve the community in several ways. One of the functions is the responsibility of being a role model and leader. This means they serve as positive examples of MSSD student citizens. They help plan, sponsor, and coordinate floor educational, social, cultural, and recreational activities. They are also responsible for providing support and advice to students in their residences, on both personal and academic concerns.

Student Body Government

The Student Body Government (SBG) is comprised of sub- organizations in which students have the opportunity to serve in leadership roles and gain valuable communication and organizational skills. They plan and participate in school activities and mediate interests and concerns with the school administration and Student Life. The SBG is also responsible to oversee all four classes: Senior Class, Junior Class, Sophomore Class and Freshman Class.

Student Representative Council

The SRC is comprised of a representative (or two) of each class and organization. Students will share their ideas and/or concerns during the Student Representative Council meetings run by the Vice-President of SBG. The SRC is the students’ opportunity to make proposals to the Student Body Government, who will then in turn share with the Student Life Leadership Team during a scheduled meeting. This is a way for students to have a voice by become involved in their school, working in collaboration with the teachers and staff of the school and student life program for the benefit of everyone.

Student Enterprises

We offer many opportunities for students to develop their work experiences with paid positions. 

Peer Tutors – They will work with other students to improve their academic needs

Blue Crew – They will work with the Athletic programs for home games and practices.

Red Crew – They will focus in documenting Student Life activities throughout the school year.

Eagle Zone – They will work in the snack bars and lead activities in the Eagle Zone.

Student Activities Assistant – They will focus on coordinating Student Life activities and develop weekend activities for the students.
